Handcrafted using cherry inner and outer veneers, the Big Softy’s 14" x 6.5" shell encircles a central core of kiln-dried Balsa. Yes - Balsa! Don’t be put off by thoughts of model planes and crafting; Balsa is a seriously underrated wood and is perfectly suited to the Big Softy. This surprisingly light, open-density hardwood possesses a micro-pore grain structure that actively filters out higher frequencies, giving you a massive range of tonal possibilities. The Big Softy is designed to enable higher batter head tension for a truly responsive rebound, while still achieving bigger, warmer, and funkier sounds without the need to detune.

The plastic retainer inside the lug, which normally holds the ferrule nut in place, has been deliberately undersized, allowing the tension rod to bite into the plastic and provide a tighter grip in the lug. The result is a drum that holds the drum skin under tension far more reliably for longer periods, ensuring your drums sound amazing all the time.
